If you do, users will have a 30-day trial period during which they can unenroll devices from management. You have the option to add devices to Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager using Apple Configurator 2. Apple TV devices can also be configured using a Wi-Fi or ethernet connection. It requires iOS devices to be connected to a Mac running Apple Configurator 2. It isn’t a zero-touch option, but it is a pretty powerful tool. This is because the records of the device and its association with an organization are required to link the device to that organization and its Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager account.įor iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV devices purchased outside those official channels, Apple Configurator 2 allows IT departments to automate the setup and enrollment process. Only devices that are purchased directly from Apple or select Apple Authorized resellers can be configured by DEP. This occurs directly in the setup assistant and requires no additional work for the user.Īs powerful as DEP is, it does have one key limitation. ![]() When a device is activated, the activation server recognizes it as belonging to your organization and leverages Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager to automatically enroll the device in your mobile device management (MDM) platform and apply configuration profiles to the device. Of course those "extra" security features ended up biting us as well.Apple’s Automated Device Enrollment (often referred to by its older name, Device Enrollment Program, or DEP) makes it possible to automatically enroll iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TV devices with zero touch from IT. However, if you mention multiple locations, and in those cases, it might be safer to have those devices supervised, as it means you have more control over them. However, you might want to consider Guided Access Mode (with a Passcode), as it's very similar and will be possible with an unsupervised device. Most of what you are trying to do seems like it should be achievable with just an MDM on an unsupervised device. So it's definitely possible to backup and migrate. The only solution to this is to factory reset the iPads and supervise them on another Mac, resulting in the loss of any data on the iPad. If there is a fault, such as a hard drive failure, which causes your Apple Configurator data files to be lost you will no longer be able to manage your iPads. If your iPads are supervised by Apple Configurator they are permanently tied to a single Mac. However, I know he kept pushing for DEP because of that reason. ![]() By the time I got to this, we were already on the DEP program. I'm not too familiar with Apple Configuator as we had another employee who handled that and he left already. It can be upgraded to El Capitan so for $150 it is a reasonable expense for us to try out.Īm I understanding correctly that if an iPad is deployed as Supervised using Apple Configurator then that software install is the only one that can manage the device later? What provisions exist for backing this up? ![]() I was looking at a used Mac Mini (late 2009) model as an option. The new MDM that we have in evaluation supposedly offers the full gamut of iOS policies and supports DEP, but I don't have access to it yet. Our current MDM is Google, which only offers the basic security policies. I was hoping to deploy the iPads in Single App Mode running the conference room control UI, unify the system settings between all devices, as well as save profiles that have the static network configs that's required, apps, and other settings to keep downtime to a minimum if anything happens to one of the units. The conference room system they work with is only in place at one location for now, but may be expanded to others.
