Carbon capture and storage (CCS) refers to a collection of technologies that can combat climate change by reducing carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions. The second methodcarbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS)puts the some of the recovered CO to use in other ways, often to help with oil extraction. Draft roadmap for your reference is available here. Department of Energy (DOE) launched its Carbon Storage Program in 1997. The draft Roadmap is now open for receiving suggestions/ comments from public and has been uploaded on the website of MoPNG. CCS can be applied to large point sources such as fossil fuel energy facilities like the natural gas-powered plants or steel manufacturing sites. Carbon mineralization is a versatile and thermodynamically downhill process that can be harnessed for capturing, storing, and utilizing CO2 to synthesize products with enhanced properties. A task force titled ‘Upstream for CCS/CCUS’ (UFCC) to this effect is working to prepare the ‘2030 Roadmap for CCUS’ that shall provide necessary direction and guidelines for all oil and gas companies to develop and scale up CCS/CCUS techniques. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India has initiated efforts to provide opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing to the industry and prepare a unified and practical strategy for development and implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS)/ Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) techniques in the oil and gas sector in India.
